God gives thumbs up, a photo by Joseph Barber on Flickr.
Here’s the story behind the pic: I took this back in Summer 2010 on a road trip across America. I believe we were driving through North Texas when we spotted this giant thumbs up in the sky. Everything really is bigger in Texas even the thumbs up. In this case God was giving us a thumbs up for our road trip from LA to Boston and back (all within 9 days. 6,000+miles). Quite an adventure and I wouldn’t do it again, unless I had 2 months. ha.
Anyways, what I really wanted to share with y’all are some reflections on my first encounter with the show “Undercover Boss”.
So last night I watched “Undercover Boss” for the first time with both my mom and grandma (maybe they will make a show called “Undercover Mom”…mmm, horrible idea, but Hollywood somehow makes millions off ’em). I’m sure you all know how the plot goes in the end, Punish the employee(s) or Reward the employee(s) with $20k, shopping sprees, vacations, college funds, etc.
so to the point. Some of the rewarded employees give thanks to God for the amazing rewards they surprisingly receive, but I was considering what if they were instead stripped of everything. What if all their wealth, health, and family were taken from them? (of course this would be a terrible show, so maybe think of this outside of the context of a television program). Would they/we still thank God for the loss of everything instead of being given so many things? Maybe instead we would curse God.
I’m sure we all think of Job (from the Old testament) who actually experienced the loss of everything. To many this would be the greatest curse, but actually it would be the greatest blessing of all. To lose all earthly vanities to gain our One heavenly, Reality, Christ. This is what Job didn’t see, but what we now see. God wanted to strip Job of everything, good things, even things necessary to human life so that God could be all these things to him as He originally intended. This is God’s wisdom and His love which many times we may not realize nor understand.
I guess that might leave us with the question, what is Blessing?
